Early September 1906
Rising racial tensions fueled by inflammatory articles published in local newspapers contributed to radical viewpoints. Supremacist sentiments of John T. Gates and Hoke Smith incited racial tensions. W.E.B Dubois and J. Max Barber told another story.
Mid-September 1906
Newspapers publish sensational stories of alleged assaults on white women by African American men, heightening fear and anger among the white population.
September 22, 1906
White mobs formed downtown, attacking African American businesses, homes, and individuals based on inflamed racial tensions and false allegations.
September 22-24, 1906
The mob violence spreads, resulting in the destruction of property and loss of life among the African American community. Numerous African Americans are killed, and many others are injured.
September 24, 1906
Georgia Governor Joseph M. Terrell declared martial law in Atlanta to restore order, and the state militia was deployed.
September 25, 1906
Federal troops arrive in Atlanta to assist local law enforcement in quelling the violence.
September 26, 1906
The presence of the National Guard and federal troops gradually helped to restore order in the city.
September 28, 1906
Martial law is lifted in Atlanta, but the aftermath of the violence leaves the African American community to grapple with loss, destruction and heightened racial tensions.
Following Months, 1906
The massacre prompts a national conversation on race relations, violence, and justice. African American leaders and organizations call for civil rights reforms and measures to protect communities from racial violence.
