Genovese mafia family member Tony Lauria (Fat Tony) opened the Stonewall Inn as a “private” gay club in Greenwich Village, New York City.
June 24, 1969
Officers from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) raid the Stonewall, arrest employees, and confiscate liquor.
June 28, 1969
Both plain clothed and uniformed NYPD officers raided the Stonewall Inn at approximately 1:30am. Reportedly, the raid began when officers entered the bar and declared, “Police! We’re taking the place!” before arresting employees and patrons.
June 28–July 3, 1969
Stonewall patrons responded to the raid with an uprising resulting in the birth of the Gay Pride Movement. The events that occurred over those days are described as the Stonewall Uprising.
June 28, 1970
The Christopher Street Liberation March, New York’s first Gay Pride parade, honored the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprisings. The march served as an inspiration for gay activists across the world and Pride parades began to appear in cities around the globe.
May 27, 1999
The Stonewall Inn and surrounding site was the first property in the United States listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its contributions to civil rights for LGBTQ persons.
February 16, 2000
Christopher Park and the surrounding streets and sidewalks, were designated as a National Historic Landmark.
June 24, 2016
President Barack Obama signed a Presidential Proclamation for the Establishment of the Stonewall National Monument whereby Christopher Park, the park across the street from the Stonewall Inn, will be administered by the National Park Service.
