Why We March: The March on Washington and the March for Our Lives
In this lesson, students will take a deep dive into the motivations of Americans who participate in non-violent protests throughout history.
Bayard Rustin was an activist and leader for civil rights, socialism, and LGBT rights. Rustin oversaw the March on Washington’s logistics, served as a key advisor to King during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, helped launch the SCLC, and planned numerous marches and demonstrations. Despite his accomplishments, Rustin’s Quaker beliefs and open homosexuality prompted many members of the Big Six to appoint A. Philip Randolph as the official organizer instead.
