Alonzo Herndon was a pioneering African American entrepreneur and philanthropist, best known as the founder of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, one of the most successful Black-owned businesses in the United States. Born into slavery in Social Circle, Georgia, Herndon’s mother was Sophenie Herndon, an enslaved woman, and his father was Frank Herndon, their enslaver. Alonzo’s grandparents, younger brother Thomas, and over twenty other enslaved people worked on the Herndon Farm. Following the Civil War, Alonzo and his family left the farm with nothing more than a few quilts. His mother found work nearby and worked during the day. However, due to the recent decline of the southern economy, she was paid by molasses, potatoes and other rations, barely enough to feed her family.
Alonzo and his family eventually returned to the Herndon Farm, and he worked there as a sharecropper and laborer before moving to Atlanta in the late 19th century. There, he learned the barbering trade and eventually opened his own barbershop, which became one of the most upscale establishments in the city, catering to a wealthy, predominantly white clientele. Herndon’s business acumen and determination led him to expand his ventures, and in 1905, he founded Atlanta Life, which grew to become a major financial institution serving the African American community.
Herndon’s success in business made him one of the wealthiest African Americans of his time, and he used his wealth to support civil rights causes and community development. He was a prominent figure in Atlanta’s Black elite and was actively involved in organizations like the Niagara Movement, a precursor to the NAACP. Herndon’s legacy extends beyond his business achievements; he was a key figure in advancing economic opportunities for African Americans during a time of widespread racial discrimination and segregation. His contributions to both business and social progress left a lasting impact on Atlanta and the broader African American community. At the time of his death in 1927, Alonzo Herndon was Atlanta’s wealthiest Black citizen, owning more property than any other African American in the city.
